Cheer on The Newburyport Clamdiggers in the Essex Base Ball League 2019 championship, while helping in the fight to end cancer!
About the Event
On October 5th, 2019 the four vintage base ball teams of the Essex Base Ball Organization will face-off in an exciting series of single-elimination 1864-era base ball games – but only one team will win the coveted “Championship Jug.”
Although the Clamdiggers hold the record for the most EBBO championship wins (2013, 2015 and 2016), it’s been three long years since the team hoisted The Jug in victory and we’re on the hunt to win it back in 2019!
Starting at 11am, fans – better known as “cranks” – will be invited to step back in history to watch the game as it was played in 1864. What does that mean? Well, for one, it means no gloves. It’s a thrill to watch the players, dressed in uniforms matching the era, dive to make bare-handed catches and attempt to hit moon shots into the corn field. Fun for families and folks of all ages, everyone is invited to this action-packed play-off series. Come to pet the farm animals, pay a visit to the Ipswich Ale vintage beer truck, grab a Jim-Jam hot dog, and find a seat along one of the baselines of this beautiful historic farm!
The suggested $5 admission fee benefits charities to fund cancer research and local educational initiatives, but additional donations are appreciated! The Newburyport Clamdiggers have a team fundraising goal of $1,500 that we hope you will help us achieve.
About Jan's Pitch
Jan Sheehy – a beloved art teacher and mother to Essex Base Ball Organization founders Brian and Chris Sheehy – lost her battle with cancer in April, 2013. Jan’s Pitch is an annual celebration honoring her life, which helps raise money to fund cancer research and provide valuable educational opportunities for students in the Lawrence area, where Jan taught for over 20 years.
About The Newburyport Clamdiggers
The Newburyport Clamdiggers are modeled after a real Massachusetts base ball team that played in the 19th Century. They were one of the first teams to play in the New England League, which spanned six decades during the pivotal early years of minor league baseball. The Clamdiggers played part of their 1885 and 1886 seasons with this historic league, competing against clubs from Massachusetts and Maine.
