My story started 7 years ago. My mom passed away in November 2012 of Lung Cancer. I was grieving for months afterwards and I knew I needed to put my energy into something positive towards her fight. It had been very long months of caretaking and I was very passionate about fighting against cancer because I saw what she had to endure. It was horrible. The months leading to her death was not easy because I saw what Cancer does to the mind and body. I saw her deteriote right in front of me. I will never forget the night Hurricane Sandy hit New York because my mom gave me a kiss goodnight. She was lucid and able to speak to me. The next morning she was gone- not physically gone but mentally gone. For one week she slowly passed away and that was the hardest week of my life. Going through this experience, I knew I wanted to put all my energy into creating a life dedicated to health and wellness.
I decided to run a marathon in my mom and dads honor. My dad had passed away from brain cancer a few years earlier. I put all my energy into training. . . It was about stepping outside my comfort zone for them in a symbolic way through being healthy and showing how strong I could be. My running mantra was: “You don’t know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice!”
This started a 7 year journey of dedicating myself to being healthy, stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself through accepting difficult challenges. SInce 2013, I have run 7 marathons. I have become a health coach and want to be an example of how to lead a healthy lifestyle.
I want to continue to bring attention to the Fight Against Cancer through running the Chicago Marathon with this amazing organaization that helps caregivers and those fighting Cancer. I know how it feels to be a caregiver to someone FIghting Cancer. PLease help me in helping them.
