You might have seen the shocking headlines in Oakland--three puppies found tortured and dumped in a pile of garbage at 89th Ave and G Street over Memorial Day weekend. It is terrifying and heartbreaking to think about what these babies--two found with severely broken jaws, a third with a missing rear paw--have had to endure.
One of the puppies, a German shepherd-husky mix we named Chloe, was brought to OAS immediately after she was found on Monday. Though her attending veterinarian hoped to reconstruct her jaw, it soon became apparent that her bones had been so severely and cruelly shattered, the only option was a mandibularectomy, the removal of her jaw. The surgery happened on May 31, and Chloe is now recovering.
Despite what she has gone through, the vets report that Chloe's personality is "amazing"--"super sweet" and "trying to lick their faces" even with her mouth hanging open. Her prognosis is good, and her medical team believes she can still have a great quality of life.
Please support our emergency appeal to fund Chloe's medical care, which has already cost $14,000, and could reach $20,000 and beyond. It is likely that at least one of the other puppies discovered over the weekend could also come under the care of Oakland Animal Services. And for serious, expensive medical cases like this, FOAS funding is the only way our city shelter can subsidize the veterinary care required to give Chloe and other victims of animal cruelty a fighting chance. Thank you so much.
