It is with a heavy heart that the Celebration of People, Inc. announces the cancellation of the 105th Chico Pioneer Day Parade and the Downtown Plaza Festival that was scheduled for May 2nd, 2020. This is done with advice from authorities and with a prudent concern for public health and safety.
The loss of the 2020 parade is heartbreaking, especially for the young people who participate every year, we are using this temporary setback as an opportunity to take the parade and related events onward and upward. While we were not able to find a date this year that would work for the parade, we have rescheduled the Downtown Plaza portion of our spring event to Saturday, October 24th, 2020.
It takes a village to put on a parade. It is with that spirit in mind that we set up this Go Fund Me campaign for, not only the May 1st, 2021 parade and festival, but also the event in October that we hope all of you will come to. Understanding that people, groups and businesses are hurting. We do not want to ask anyone for too much, nor do you have to give today if you are suffering disruptions in your life, but if many people give a little over the next six months, we can ensure that the Festival and Reunion in October and the 2021 parade will be all that they can be!
We are all in this slow moving catastrophe together and nothing is more important than people’s health and even lives. However we are social by nature and many great events have been and will be cancelled and we grieve for all of them!
This year was to be the first year we partnered with the 23,000+ member Facebook group, You Know You’re from Chico When…for their Reunion. We look forward to working with YKYFC and hope many of our regular vendors, especially the artisans and the great non-profits that have educational booths at the post parade Plaza event will join us in October.
Our theme this year was – Celebrating Local Sports in the Past, Now and in the Future – with a special emphasis on Sports Hall of Fame, and will be carried over to Saturday, May 1st, 2021. We chose the theme inspired by the Olympics that have been postponed until the Summer of 2021. We also had a sub-theme celebrating the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage in the United States and it too will return in 2021 and hopefully at the October 24th festival.
As the stewards of a beloved community tradition, we feel one of the ways we could help our community recover and persevere is to insure the Parade continues to improve for another hundred years.
We have kept our parade entry fees low so as not to create a barrier from any family-friendly group wanting to join the parade. We have relied on lots of people and businesses that supported the parade in cash and/or in-kind donations and will continue to seek help wherever possible, but now we turn to the parade-loving-grass-roots of our community to help bring your Spring Parade to the next level.
We are working on adding even more great things to next year’s parade, festival and You Know You’re from Chico When… Facebook group Reunion that will be held in the Plaza on the same day (Saturday, May 1st, 2021).
The Celebration of People, Inc., thanks all the people over the years who have helped make the parade the special event it is every year.
From all of us to all of you…stay safe and healthy!
