Covid-19 has disrupted our normal lives immensely. While many of us may be fortunate enough to live within the purview of government rules and regulations and the sage advice of health professionals on how we should live and maintain our lives, there will be some who cannot. In these cases, the virus can have severe consequences and cause unforeseen economic hardships to those infected by the virus or beset with loss of income, education, food or lodging.
At such times, our community solidarity demands that we come together and be prepared in case it hits some among us too. Therefore, this is a clarion call for us to prepare ourselves to care for and provide any essential service as much as we can practically within our resources and will to help.
With this in mind, 11 Nepali social organizations in Chicago along with community activists convened to address these concerns. The outcome of the meeting was an agreement to form a 23-member Covid 19 Awareness and Support Group – Illinois (CASGI) team. The team believes that this will show our united character and provide moral support to potential affected individuals and family.
The objective of CASGI is to reach out and communicate with all community members, to ask for their support and provide help to the best of our ability and resources. This will be in the form of services to affected individuals. In addition, ASIGC members have agreed to offer their time and efforts for these services as requested within their abilities and to raise funds through “ChicagoNepaliUnitedFundforCorona”. These funds will be needed to acquire goods and services needed and in cases, already being provided now, as well as possible financial assistance. This is new to all of us. We cannot define all our needs!
To that end, group members have taken the lead in donating to the GoFundMe site established for this purpose and we exhort you all to donate what you can and quickly.
The principles for the operation and execution of the goals of CASGI are available at …
We want to clarify that our financial help may not be enough to support all the needs of an affected person. It is not intended to replace insurance, government benefits or assistance. It is simply meant to help minimize the challenges faced by community members and supplement other benefits they may receive. It is simply an expression of our community's concern and commitment to stand together and take care of each other.
