What drew me to Chicago Commons almost 2 years ago was having the opportunity to work with and serve people in my own backyard. Chicago Commons has been in the city of Chicago for 125 years- you do not see too many nonprofit organizations that have been around for that long and we still serve over 3,000 people daily! In my role as Development Coordinator for Chicago Commons, I get to work with everyone across the organization. I am in the classroom working with kids on our Reggio Emilia curriculum, I interact with our Family Hub team to improve communications to our parents and families, and I see our seniors who come in everyday for our Adult Day service. Working at Chicago Commons is a huge blessing because the people I work with are so passionate about the work they do.
So who would be crazy enough to commit to run 26.2 miles? I did! I did because I believe in Commons’ mission: to serve to empower children, families and seniors to overcome poverty and systemic barriers, embrace opportunities, and thrive across generations. We serve communities in West Humboldt Park, Back of the Yards, and Pilsen where the average family income is $16,000 a year. All the miles that I put in and all the money raised will go to supporting these communities.
On October 13, 2019, I will be running 26.2 miles for Chicago Commons in the Chicago Marathon and not only raising money for the organization but also raising awareness. We no longer want Chicago Commons to be Chicago’s best kept secret! Reach out to me anytime if you are interested in learning more about Chicago Commons. Thank you in advance for your contribution and come out and cheer me on October 13th!
