Help us support our tribal communities in this time of need.
COVID-19 exposes what we have always known as Indigenous Peoples: we are our only defense. Tribal communities have been disregarded and left out of federal and local plans to invest resources quickly in the fight against COVID-19. We also know that the resources to fight the spread of the virus were never going to be equitably distributed in the first place. Indigenous Peoples in this country have over 500 years of experience being on the other side of the coin. But we are resilient peoples, and this is not the first time we have faced a profound threat to our survival.
We have over 5,000 residents on our reservation spread across five community districts. Recently, we found out that our local health center has only 15 tests to serve our entire reservation. The adjacent communities right off our reservation are in no better shape: they have less than 20 tests each.
Our military societies are volunteering as security making sure the curfew order is enforced starting at 8pm each night and ensuring no through trafffic exits the highway and into our towns, but they need masks, gas, water, and food. Families who are struggling in the best of times are now faced with having to stock up on food and supplies for an unknown duration of time. Aside from our little local trading post, the nearest stores are 100 miles away. We are trying to keep our elders and our vulnerable safe at home, but the reality is overcrowded housing is the norm. Masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer are nowhere to be found. Stimulus money has not yet reached our isolated little corner of the world.
Our communities need more resources to effectively protect our people. Join us in raising funds for Cheyenne communities as we prepare for an onslaught of COVID-19 in our homeland. Your tax-deductable gift will provide immediate financial support so essential food, medicines, masks, gas, shelter, and other supplies make it to Cheyenne communites.
Help us keep our people safe and healthy. Nea'eše (thank you).
