Everyone has a cancer story. Some of us have been personally attacked by the disease. Some of us are caring for a loved one enduring chemotherapy and other treatments. A coach, a friend, a parent, a sibling, a relative or a pet has suffered. Regardless of the role, everyone affected is a warrior because of the strength necessary to fight, to support and, too often, to yield.
Many in the field hockey community know that Chelsea Field Hockey's co-founder lost her seven-year battle to cancer in December 2017. Roxy Block was the bedrock of field hockey in Michigan. She was an outspoken advocate for growing the game. She was a champion for strong, academically focused youth, as well as for her family, 4-H, all animals, outside-the-box educational opportunities and new ideas. She was a leader who inspired others to be their very best while she made things happen.
Additionally, longtime companion and team mascot Izzy is doggedly fighting cancer this season. She has been a sideline cheerleader and furry bench companion to teammates throughout the years.
Our team started fundraising for cancer research when Roxy was first diagnosed. This season, we are driven to continue the annual tradition to raise money that goes directly to research at the National Foundation for Cancer Research. One-hundred percent of proceeds raised goes 100% to research. This season, we Play4Roxy, we Play4Izzy and we Play4 all loved ones fighting the disease. We Play4TheCure to end all cancers.
