Dear Friends, once more, I am going to run both the Chicago and the New York Marathon back to back. With the charity CellmatesOnTheRun we raise funds for The Chicago Diabetes Project.
For the last 20+ years, we have worked intensively on providing patients a functional cure for juvenile diabetes through islet cell transplants. Some islet cell transplant patients have no longer needed insulin shots for over 10 years after their simple procedure. We are not done. The procedure is far from perfect and for now limited to a small number of worst case diabetic patients due to the dependency on organ donors and the need to suppress the immune system of the recipients to prevent rejection.
Our research focuses on finding a renewable cell source in order to provide many more patients with an islet cell transplant, and we develop biomaterials and biotechnologies to protect the transplanted cells from rejection without the need for long term medications.
We work as a global research team in collaborative manner, and every dollar donated goes directly into our global team's research.
Thanks in advance for your generous support.
