Searching for answers after the tragedy of losing a son and brother, Janet, Phil, Courtney and Lauren Liscio decided to honor Dan’s life by serving and assisting others. In June of 2009 they founded Westies Care as a grassroots Charity focused on collaborating with citizens and organizations of the greater New Haven Area with a focus on elevating the lives of the underserved.
Westies Care is a recognized 501(c)3 Charity that is volunteer based, no one is compensated. Any and all funding raised is allotted to the specific organization or cause named.
Over the past decade Westies Care has assisted many Charities and organizations by lending support with volunteers and fundraising. Among them are Breast Cancer Awareness, Multiple Sclerosis, Special Olympics, American Red Cross, Juvenile Diabetes and locally, W.H.E.A.T., West Haven Seahawks, Project Graduation - Blue and White Up All Night, several P.TA.s and many of the West Haven High School Teams and Organizations.
Currently Westies Care collaborates with the First Congregational Church of West Haven and Vertical Church with primary funding from the West Haven Rotary Club and private donations in operating the Community Kitchen. This outreach provides two meals per week to the underserved population of West Haven. We are now delivering meals and food as the Covid-19 Pandemic has increased the demand by 60%.
Celebrating our Volunteers and Community is our Annual Fundraiser that allows us to recognize the Student Volunteers and Leaders whereas we select High School Seniors that meet specific criteria to receive Community Service Awards and Scholarships.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic our Annual Scholarship Dinner may be cancelled. With that, we will experience a significant funding shortfall.
Certainly, we are all aware of the horrific circumstances suffered due to the pandemic. For us, High School Seniors that volunteer are very special, they are the fabric of our organization. They won’t dance at the prom, they won’t walk across the stage, they won’t celebrate another victory on the fields and courts of competition. With your generosity we can award them the Scholarships they earned.
When donating, please specify if you wish your funds to be applied to either our Community Kitchen Outreach or our Scholarship Program. If you prefer to pay by check made payable to Westies Care, mail to: Westies Care, P.O. Box 16732, West Haven, CT 06516. All donations are tax deductible. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
