For our 2nd year in Cayucos we will be holding two 3-Day surf camps. A camp for Special Needs Children (July 23-24-25) and a camp for children impacted by Juvenile Diabetes (July 30-21 & Aug 1).
Children who participate in our 3 day camps often feel a sense of accomplishment and an increase of self-confidence. A feeling of “if I can surf, I can do anything”.
Siblings are always included in our camps so that they can share in the experience of their brother(s) or sister(s), creating a bond that is activity based not disability based. Parents are impacted as well, some suddenly realize that their non-typical child is more capable than they thought. This realization can often lead to a more participation in more typical activities for the special needs child.
Here is an excerpt from a parent email after last year's Cayucos camp attended by children impacted by autism, down syndrome, severe ADHA and Cerebral Palsy.
"This camp meant the world to me. First because many times I navigate Julia through a world that ignores and discounts her. But at surf camp, amazing people saw her, encouraged her and celebrated her. This made me weep with joy. I also again realized how much Julia is capable of and re-dedicated myself to helping her 'reach for the stars.' Finally, there is just something amazing about being out in Mother Nature with friends and combining the power of the ocean with human ingenuity. Surfing is unique and inspiring.”
Thank you for your support and helping us fulfill our mission.
