CASTELAR CARES: HOLIDAY FOOD ASSISTANCE
Distributing grocery cards to families in need at Castelar School by
December 11, 2020 Chinatown, Los Angeles
This holiday season will be extra difficult for food-insecure families at Castelar due to the pandemic. Will you please help us?
The school’s booster club FACES (Friends and Alumni of Castelar Elementary School) is collecting donations to be pooled together to purchase grocery gift cards for the school to give families who need it most.
At the beginning of the 2020–21 school year, we ran our first Castelar Cares campaign and were able to purchase $6,120 worth of grocery cards for families who were hit especially hard by this health crisis. We hope to repeat this wonderful feat for the holidays.
"The pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone, so I am grateful for the outpouring of kindness from our community. Thank you for your generosity in donating grocery gift cards to our families in need. I have no doubt that we will get through this pandemic together. Go Dragons!”
–Amy Luu, Principal of Castelar School
Located in the historic neighborhood of Chinatown, Castelar is Los Angeles’ second-oldest public school. Our school has a decades-long tradition of providing a safe learning environment for the largely immigrant and English-learning population of Chinatown and the surrounding areas. We have the most diverse student body with many of the kids coming from immigrant families.
COVID-19 has hit the Castelar community especially hard because a significant number of our families work in the service sector. Even before the pandemic, Castelar was classified as a Title 1 school with over 80.54% (600+ students) at the poverty level. 53.2% qualify for free or reduced-fee lunches.
FACES is collecting donations and purchasing grocery cards that our school administrators will be in charge of distributing to our families in need.
