We're on a Mission to Revolutionize Social Emotional Learning Through Technology
In this time of uncertainty and isolation, educators and youth advocates are in immediate need of a digital tool that engages students in meaningful activities. As we're all seeing, this trend may last a lot longer.
We've worked diligently over the past few months on a few pilots (as referenced in the video above) and we're ready to take the next step into a full-fledged web platform and mobile application - a place for youth to engage in meaningful activities, overseen by their educators and advocates, from anywhere they may be.
In order to reach our goal of lauching this platform in the Fall of 2020, we need to raise at least $25,000 (and that's just the beginning). Will you help us?
Carousel, Inc. is a new non-profit social enterprise that has emerged from our parent organization, Denver Kids, Inc. (our nonprofit fiscal sponsor). We are building a platform-based technology to make social-emotional learning content fun, and accessible anywhere.
The technology will be compatible with any type of SEL curriculum content and will allow youth-serving organizations, like Denver Kids, as well as school districts and mentoring programs to engage their kids in activities proven to promote social and emotional development and wellbeing.
Please consider a tax-deductible donation so that we may be ready to launch this new technology in the Fall 2020 semester.
What is Social-Emotional Learning?
Social-Emotional Learning can be distilled down into twelve distinct skills that we all must learn and master in order to reach our full potential. These skills are not academic in nature (e.g., science, math, reading, etc.). Rather, SEL skills are related to how well people manage the challenges they face in three relationships; their relationship and connection with themselves (self), to society (others), and to life.
These twelve SEL skills are as follows:
- Connection to Self: Awareness, Acceptance, Control, and Improvement.
- Connection to Others: Perception, Tolerance, Collaboration, and Service.
- Connection to Life: Curiosity, Calmness, Creativity, and Courage.
The degree to which people master these skills directly impacts their likelihood of success in both academics and career.
The Platform & Technology
Carousel is a platform-based technology to aid in the distribution of any existing and future SEL curricula to the masses. The technology is compatible with any type of curriculum content and will allow youth-serving organizations, as well as school districts and mentoring programs to engage their kids in activities proven to promote social and emotional development and wellbeing.
Engage youth in meaningful, fun, incentive-driven activities that promote social-emotional well-being… and feel nothing like school work. Our mobile app will be fully HIPAA & FERPA compliant - we take handling of youth data very seriously.
See what your child is doing to develop their skills, stay connected with their educators and mentors, and play a vital role in their social-emotional development.
Educators, social-workers, counselors, & youth mentors now have a command center to oversee the social-emotional development of your kids. Our platform is driven by game mechanics and positive habit-forming so kids will want to take initiative.
Oversee all activities within your ecosystem, empower your teams and staff members, track productivity, engage your community, expand your reach, and tell a better impact story to donors with real-time data.
The Benefits to Organizations & Schools:
A Lower Cost Per Student
As it stands today, Denver Kids, Inc. spends, on average, around $2,300 annually per student served; for an approximate total of 1,300 students spread across grades Kindergarten through 12th Grade within the Denver Public School District (DPS). The subset of the DPS student population served by DKI only accounts for 1% of all students; the total DPS student population is over 93,000.
With the introduction of a technology-enabled delivery system, we believe we can drastically lower the annual cost per student served from $2,300 per student to the low $100’s per student, per year.
An Increased Capacity for Staff
Full-time Denver Kids program staff currently manage caseloads of upwards of 55 students, with whom they are required to interact at least twice per month during the school year. With Carousel, these staff members will be able to increase the frequency of meaningful touch points with their students within an average month, also potentially increasing the size of a manageable caseload.
It is commonly accepted in academia that SEL practices and curricula have a residual impact. However, until now, most of the outcomes are anecdotal. The Carousel platform will allow organizations and schools to demonstrate to donors the impact they are making, as it relates to social emotional skills practices, on a case-by-case basis.
Carousel, Inc. is a Colorado Nonprofit Corporation under fiscal sponsorship of Denver Kids, Inc., a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit. Donations are tax-deductible.
