On May 19, 2018, I will be running the Brooklyn Half marathon to raise money for CALA- an immigrant defense nonprofit located right here in Brooklyn (running may be overstating facts--probably more fair to call it jogging, or even perhaps hobbling-but it is for a great cause)!
Central American Legal Assitance (CALA) https://www.centralamericanlegal.info/ has been on the front lines of immigration defense in NYC for the last 32 years. They are a small and scrappy nonprofit that provides top-notch legal assistance to immigrants facing deportation. CALA's 12 staffmembers (with the help of Oscar Gerardi Caceres, the office cat) fight the government every day to ensure that immigrants are treated with dignity in New York's Immigration Courts. Given the current anti-immigrant climate, they need our support.
CALA doesn't have a big and fancy development team, so they depend on individual donations to keep their doors open to the thousands of immigrants they serve every year. I am hoping to raise a thousand dollars--about the cost of putting one case to trial. Will you help me help CALA ?
