For the past few years we have been partnering with a local church to house some of our clients in their “ministry house”. Basically, a property the church owns that is divided into 2 apartments, that they “rent” to our clients on an income based, sliding scale. This has been an amazing opportunity for our clients who have been able to work with us and live in this home, while paying rent based on their income. Our goal has always been that the clients start at an extremely discounted rate and then as they grow and are doing better financially, we increase the rent until they are able to afford “full price” rent. Then we help them move to an apartment where they pay full rent/utilities, allowing us to move another client into the “ministry house” and start the whole process over again.
Recently the church has decided to sell this “ministry house”. They have offered it to us at a very reasonable price and their wish would be that the house would continue to be used for this purpose. We know that transitional housing is a key component to our program as we grow, and feel that this would be a good first step for us. It is not a huge building with lots of apartments to take care of and manage, and this will give us the opportunity to learn and grow in a smaller setting before we branch out into something larger.
We have decided to start a capital campaign to try to raise the funds necessary to purchase this property and complete some needed upgrades/repairs. Although the property is move-in-ready (and we currently have clients residing there), we do feel the need to do some repairs to make the property more energy efficient and client friendly.
With a donation to help us purchase this property you would be empowering a survivor of domestic violence to take a step that she may not be able to take otherwise. It would provide housing for a family that cannot afford typical housing and provide a safe home, free from abuse for the most vulnerable in our community.
