One People. One Aim. One Destiny.
The Short of It: Camp Pumziko is an African-centered week long sleep away camp that is staffed completely by volunteers and funded by the community. In order to maintain our self-determination, we need your support. Your donations will go towards providing scholarships for children to attend and the overall budget of the camp (such as renting the grounds and purchasing food and supplies).
The Long of It: Camp Pumziko is a national camp that serves youth ages six through seventeen and is a program of Community Aid Development (CAD), the New Afrikan People's Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. The activities offered teach political, cultural and historical subjects while incorporating outdoor camping skills. CAD’s Camp Pumziko has been training youth for twenty years to become activists in their respective communities. Because the coordinators are veteran liberation movement activists themselves, the young people gain a unique insight into the Civil Rights Movement and the subsequent movements, allowing them to analyze the strengths and challenges of individuals and organizations. We are members of the Community Aid Development (CAD) New Afrikan People's Organization (NAPO), the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM), New Afrikan Scout Organization (NASO) and activists in our communities that teach our youth about wilderness survival, self-determination and sustainability of culture and community from an African-centered perspective, all while having fun! Our staff of volunteers fly and drive in from around the nation to support the consistency and growth of our camp. A vast majority of our campers rely on donations and sponsorship from the community to get them to camp. Our entire staff consists of volunteers and a large number of them take off a week from work in order to attend camp.
That's Why We Need You! Our goal is $12,500. That amount covers the administrative costs including space, activities, supplies, equipment and food. The camp is fully staffed with volunteers and we have children come from cities around the nation. We have had children and staff attend from Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, California, Connecticut, New York and more. Your donations will help us rent a host camp facility, purchase insurance for the week of camp, buy supplies for activities, procure food and provide scholarships to campers with financial need. If we are unable to reach our goal, we will still be able to offer some scholarships to campers in need.
How You Can Help! We want to encourage donations of any amount! We appreciate the words of encouragement that have come and the support of donations big and small. The groups at camp are separated into ages by these names, Pakas (6-8 yrs), Chuis (9 and 10 yrs), Simbas (11 and 12 yrs) and Panthers (13-17 yrs). Even if you can’t contribute with a monetary donation, you can still help by spreading the word on your social network pages, via email and word of mouth using the share tools on this page.
