Hello! My name is Luke Conley. I am currently working on my bachelors degree in music education at Morehead State University. Every year since 2006, I have spent my summers at YMCA Camp Ernst growing in Spirit, Mind, and Body. When I was growing up, my family was not financially stable enough to spend the money for summer camp. So, the only way I ever went was through the annual scholarship campaign. Thankfully I was lucky enough to get a scholarship for a week of camp every year while I was growing up.
One week. I only ever spent one week a year at camp. But that one week a year would end up changing my life forever. At camp, kids learn about the four character qualities: Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, and Caring. When I was a small camper, my counselors showed me the love of nature, how to share, to treat others right, to tell the truth, to respect my elders, to be responsible for my own things, to be a leader, and to how have fun while doing it all!
Here are some more awesome things that camp does for kids: -provides outdoor adventures and fosters friendships among more than 3800 youth each summer -Encourages young people to conquer their fears and build self-esteem on the high ropes course -Recognizes youth who display the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility with Honor Camper cups that are proudly hung in the historic dining hall -Encourages youth to express themselves in a positive and creative way, through the arts program which includes music, movie-making and visual arts -Builds a love of healthy outdoor activities like mountain biking, kayaking and swimming -has been instilling important life skills and growing leaders since 1928 -Offers more than 400 teens and young adults the opportunity to develop valuable job skills in an independent environment each summer -Provides more than $150,000 in camp scholarships to more than 375 youth each year to allow them to benefit from the camp experience
My counselors showed me how to be myself and they thought that my loud, annoying, six year old self was okay. I thought that that was AWESOME! So that's why I kept coming back year after year after year. That's why I wanted to be a counselor; to show the kids the same love for camp and others that my counselors showed me! And I'm here to tell you that one week of camp during the summer can change a kids entire life. They'll know right from wrong. They'll know how to be a leader. They'll know how to treat people right. Going one week during the summer for sure changed my life!!! But the sad fact of the matter is, a lot of kids are in my boat right now, unable to afford just one week of camp. That's why this year my goal is to send one cabin of kids to camp for FREE though the camper scholarship campaign. Thats 12 kids. I truly, without a doubt, wholeheartedly believe that every kid deserves camp in their life. This is a HUGE goal but I think that it is reachable and dare I say surrpassable! Please donate today to change a kids life for the better!
