I’ve dreamed of running the Boston Marathon for years. I never imagined I’d be running it under the circumstances I am.
I began running as a way to spend more time with my mom. Even though I didn’t love it at first, I knew how much she enjoyed running. Her love for the sport ended up rubbing off on me. Looking back, I wish I had started earlier, so I could’ve had a few more runs with her.
Four years ago, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I didn’t know much about it at the time and had assumed she’d beat it. After doing some research, I realized her I was going to lose my mother. Within six months of her diagnosis, she was gone. She was a day shy of her 54th birthday.
Please help me in my mission to prevent other families from going theough what mine did. Consider donating to my campaign to run in memory of my mother, Kathleen Smith.
Cancer affects the entire family, not just the patient. Meeting families' overwhelming needs for accommodations, understanding, support and hope along with providing the opportunity for them to share time and experiences together embody the essence of The Cam Neely Foundation.
The Cam Neely Foundation was launched in 1995 by Boston Bruins President and alumnus, Cam Neely, after he lost his parents, Marlene and Michael Neely, to cancer. This experience created the inspiration to help others living with cancer. With the dream of honoring his beloved parents and the hope of helping others, The Cam Neely Foundation was created to help cancer patients and their families during treatment. As millions of Americans will be diagnosed this year with some form of cancer, an understandable sense of urgency propels the Foundation’s mission.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts, The Cam Neely Foundation is a support driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is comprised of two parts: The Neely Cancer Fund and The Neely House. The Neely Cancer Fund supports treatment and research efforts while The Neely House provides a convenient, comfortable place to live, relax and talk to others while undergoing treatment.
Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $31 million in support of various programs within Tufts Medical Center’s pediatric and adult Cancer Centers to design, fund and complete projects with immediate tangible results that have had a positive impact on thousands of families as they face such a difficult diagnosis. This special relationship with Tufts Medical Center ensures easy access to some of Boston’s world-renowned medical facilities and to unmatched compassionate care. Together, we recognize that everyone’s needs are unique and, therefore, we strive to provide whatever care, emotional support and hope possible to facilitate the healing process.
Please support the Cam Neely Foundation Boston Marathon Team and help adult and pediatric cancer patients and their families.
