ABOUT THE ONE LOVE FOUNDATION
One Love exists for one reason: Yeardley Love was killed and her death was avoidable if anyone in her life had truly understood the unhealthy and increasingly dangerous relationship behaviors they were seeing. Learn how one woman’s story inspired a movement. Yeardley Love lived her life with integrity, gratitude and honesty — and lots of laughter. She saw the best in everyone, and was always there to give a helping hand. Yards, as we called her, grew up in Baltimore, MD with her older sister Lexie. Yeardley loved lacrosse and, in addition to her schoolwork and athletic endeavors, she always gave of herself to others, enjoying working with underprivileged children and the elderly.
After her tragic death, Yeardley’s family and friends were surprised to learn the statistics – that 1 in 3 women in this country will be in a violent relationship during her lifetime – and grew increasingly aware that young people in particular did not seem to realize they, as a group, were at greatest risk.
Today, One Love's goal is to end relationship violence by engaging young people in a movement for change. The foundation develops compelling educational content that sparks new and novel discussions among workshop participants, inspiring them to work together to affect change in their communities. One Love's primary focus is on campus strategies for engaging kids on this issue – using the powerful film workshop, Escalation, as the spark for engagement. At every step, One Love empowers young people as the critical leaders of this movement, uniquely suited to mobilize a generation towards a brighter future where relationship violence is far less prevalent.
