What if you had the opportunity to bring diversity and inclusion to over 10,000 people? This is what the OhioCAN-Licking/Newark Homeless Outreach has accomplished in Newark, Ohio at the corner of Buena Vista and East Main over the past 2½ years.
The Newark Homeless Outreach was founded by Patricia Perry and Jen Kanagy in January 2018, because two women saw a need in our community. Newark Homeless Outreach partnered with OhioCAN, a 501C3, that seeks to Embrace, Educate, and Empower those whose lives have been impacted by homelessness, poverty, or addiction. Since the Outreach’s inception, it has grown from handing out coats and a hotdog to a hot meal every Saturday, hygiene, clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and harm reduction supplies. They have helped people to obtain furniture and household supplies for those getting their own apartments. They have bought propane for those without heat, helped obtain birth certificates for those needing an ID. They hold Hep A vaccine clinics with the help of other partnerships in the community. Most importantly the Outreach meets people where they are at and has built a community in the East end of Newark. It has brought our community together for a common cause.
Recently, the Outreach was told they have the opportunity to purchase the lot where they conduct the Outreach every Saturday, regardless of the weather. The Outreach has never canceled a Saturday in 2 ½ years. The Outreach is so grateful to the landowner who has donated the use of his land and now given us the opportunity to purchase.
Where once two women saw a need, the entire community has come together fulfilling the needs of so many. Please help us continue our efforts by giving back to those who ask for so little.
