Women Building Up Women

Habitat for Humanity York County will be celebrating International Women Build Week March 8 – 15, 2021. As part of this special week, and because of restrictions due to COVID-19, we will be hosting a week of virtual programming and using it as a peer-to-peer fundraising effort for our upcoming Saco Build. The theme of the week will be Women Building Up Women. We will be offering classes taught by locally women owned businesses, an advocacy letter writing night and a chance for people to highlight women who inspire them.

Our Saco Family Partner

Habitat for Humanity of York County is excited to share that a family has been chosen to partner for its next home building project, located in Saco. Sarah, a current Saco resident and disabled mother of 5 will purchase the new home that is planned to begin in early 2021.

“When I applied for the Saco Habitat for Humanity House, I was a disabled, newly-single mother of young children and trying to navigate my own complex health conditions in addition to those of my children with special needs. I was facing the impending loss of our home and grappling with the reality that I may not be able to keep a roof over my children’s heads. The realization that I was unable to provide for their most basic needs on my own was heart-shattering” said Sarah. “I took a humble leap of faith and applied to be the partner family for the Saco Habitat for Humanity House. Habitat for Humanity has the ability to provide my family with the support and safety that I cannot attain on my own. […] I am able to work towards getting us back onto our own solid ground and we have the hope of healing and a future again. Words fail to capture the immensity of our gratitude.”

As part of their community giving efforts and celebrating their newest location in Saco, Hancock Lumber pledged to donate 100% of the building materials for this new home. “Maine is so fortunate to have organizations like Habitat for Humanity committed to bringing affordable housing to those in need,” Hancock’s Marketing Director, Erin Plummer, commented. “The York County chapter has selected the perfect family that is so deserving of this opportunity, and we’re thankful to be a part of making this special build happen.”

“This home will truly be the culmination of community generosity,” said Habitat for Humanity York County’s Executive Director Amy Nucci. “Thanks to the generous donation of building materials from Hancock Lumber and the donation of land from the City of Saco, in 2021 we will build our first Habitat for Humanity home in Saco.”

HFHYC partners with local, low-income families in York County who show a demonstrated need for safe, affordable housing, a willingness to partner by completing “sweat equity” in the building of their own homes or the homes of other Habitat families, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. Homes are constructed using volunteer labor, donated materials, and funds, and when completed the homeowners’ mortgage payments are recycled to support the construction of future Habitat for Humanity homes.
