So, two years ago, I started a fundraiser here on crowdrise to help me raise at least $600 in order to help build a house with 15 other women for a single mom and her child in Tecate, Mexico. Back then, my incentive was to model behavior for my kids because I wanted them to be active participants in life, and I didn't want to be the "do as I say, not as I do" kind of parent. It was an incredible experience.
The financial support I received was humbling, and I was super grateful to be able to provide that money to Finding Sophia so that they could buy materials for building the structure and latrine. With the monies that we raised over the minimum amount required ($600 per person), we were able to buy bulk non-perishable foods for the immediate neighborhood, shoes, and toys for the children. We were also able to select and buy housewarming gifts for the new homeowners at the local flea market, and I can still remember the look on the mom's face when she received a brand new knife block (which was $10). Her hands flew to her mouth as she gasped and whispered, "I've always wanted scissors!"
I'm coming back to you guys because I am doing this trip again with Finding Sophia. My motivation this year is because my newly-turned 18-year old niece is coming with me. When I'd told her about my trip two years ago, she'd expressed an interest in signing up when she turned 18 to experience all I'd told her about the trip. I told her that if she decided to sign up, I'd go with her (thinking that 16-year olds say crazy things all the time). Well, lo and behold, when she told me that she'd sent in her registration form, I realized I had to send in my registration form! And, so, here I am.
On March 1, she and I are headed to Tecate, Mexico with a van full women to build a house IN ONE DAY for a single mother and her children. We'll come together in San Diego on a Thursday night and travel to Tecate. We'll build the house on Friday, spend Saturday helping out in the community, and return to San Diego on Sunday afternoon, where we'll all go our separate ways again. This year, each of the women on this trip has committed to raise at least $650. As always, any amount over the minimum $650 will go to providing housewarming gifts for the new homeowners, and food/supplies for the neighboring communities. If you are inclined to donate, I would be ever so grateful for the help. For more information, you can visit www.findingsophia.org . Thank you for considering!
