Do you know anyone who has been affected by violence?
Have you ever considered how you can help one youth make a positive life change?
Would you help stop the violence if you could?
In honor of my son, Demetrius DeShields, who was senselessly murdered, I have formed a non-profit organization called Intelligent One. Demetrius was with friends when an unidentified young man fired shots into a crowd of people shooting my son in the back. The bullet pierced his lung and heart causing him to bleed to death. Demetrius was denied his chance at a full and enriching life and his family and friends were denied that love and future as well. I cannot begin to tell you as a mother the devastation and the pain that I feel for the loss of my son. My son Demetrius, such a kind, loving young man with a big heart. I always felt so blessed and fortunate to have a son with such a caring, kind, and respectful personality. He really cared for and loved his family and always respected others, especially his elders. He had friends from different races and walks of life, he could always find the good in people. In the wintertime, a few of my neighbors would come out and let me know that Demetrius had shoveled their steps and sidewalk. They would say your son is such a nice and respectful young man. Demetrius loved sports, football and basketball were his favorites, he really liked playing basketball with his friends. When he was on the court playing basketball with his friends, he never liked strife, when the guys would get into an argument or disagreement Demetrius was always letting them know that's not what we're here for, the guys told me they appreciated it. This is just one of many stories that his friends shared with me after he was killed. Another friend said that Demetrius was always looking out for him, you can see his video below. Demetrius also played basketball for his High School, Upper Darby High, he played a game against Kobe Bryant when Kobe went to Lower Merion High School, Upper Darby High lost but it was a good game. I have several stories like these.
Intelligent One is asking for your support to stop this senseless violence by helping our teens and young adults with making better life changing decisions by building their self-esteem.
Intelligent One is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that was established to empower teens and young adults to build healthy self-esteem, to instill respect for self and others and to relate to one another in a peaceful non-violent way. Intelligent One provides alternative choices for teens and young adults at risk and before they become at risk through our Intelligent One Video Based Curriculum. The participants in Intelligent One Video Based Curriculum believe that our program can make a positive difference in our teens and young adults’ lives. We
have had Supreme Court Justice, Doctors, lawyers, Scientist, Engineers, Professors, Athletes Pastors, Entrepreneurs, former ice users who turned their life around and got their degree in social work and many more. In each video we asked our participants to share a book that inspired them or one that they think will inspire are youth. This helps to further their education as well as their reading skills. Our curriculum has been viewed by Psychologist, Social Workers and Professors, who agree that our curriculum will help our teens and young adults.
Your needed donations will help support Intelligent One programs in our public and private schools and colleges, building self-esteem in just one youth strengthens our community and can save a family from the heartache that I am personally experiencing in my life. All donations are gratefully appreciated and will be used with care and diligence for our teens and young adult program! Your donations are fully tax deductible.
In addition to your monetary donations Intelligent One is always looking for volunteers to support our program. There are many ways you can give of your time. Please email us and find out how you can help.
Sincerely, Demetrius’s mother Marlenea Salmu
