Thai Tamil Palli – An Introduction

Thai Tamil Palli was started in the year 2000 in the Roshanai area of Tindivanam city, by keeping the following goals in mind -
i) Teaching in Native Language (Tamil) to enable the knowledge growth and personality development of the children
ii) Educational Upbringing of Socially and Economically backward children
iii) Creating better citizens for the Society and Country.
Parents of the 90% of the students are daily-wage employees and/or scavenging employees of the Tindivanam Municipal Corporation. And majority of the students are the first-generation school-goers. The school provides completely free education to these students despite the fact that the government only provides free books. The rest of the expenses are managed by donations from the general public who are interested in educating these students. Currently there 197 students in the school and 19 employees including 11 teachers.
Education for the Irular Tribe

Irular, who are the native tribes of the Viluppuram District are now working as slaves in brick kilns, Rice mills and other occupations. The literacy rate among these half-nomads is the lowest in the state of Tamil Nadu. This situation drives the need for new Hostel buildings for the educational uplift of these Irular children. By building these hostel rooms, every year more than 30 Irular Children from the neighboring villages of Tindivanam. The engineers have provided a project estimate for building 3 rooms as follows:
Room #1 - 332sqft - INR.5,30,000 - $7,500
Room #2 - 282sqft - INR 4,70,000 - $6,600
Room #3 - 260sqft - INR 4,70,000 - $6,600
Total INR 14,70,000 - $20,700
The school also provides mid-day meals to the 197 students, 19 staff members and a few old- age people every day from the funds donated by kind-hearted people. For the 30 students who are going to stay in the hostel, all three meals will be provided for free by the school management. It has been decided to bear the expenses for one of the rooms above by the Tamil People living in the United States. The fund raising will be carried forward by TGROC, a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt Non-profit organization.
