Four and a half years ago, I started working at Chinese Progressive Association. I came in as a youth organizer for our Youth Movement of Justice and Organizing (Youth MOJO) and our Gender, Sexuality, Diversities (GSD) programs. Everyday this community shows me what it means to trust, support, love, and boldly enter into the moment of these times.
We live in a world today where we see dehumanization of immigrants, working class communities of color left and right. From a young age, I learned to internalize shame of growing up from a working-class immigrant family. CPA matters to me because we create spaces for young people, families, workers to unlearn our internalized shame and reclaim our collective resilience and working-class pride!
CPA matters to me because we ORGANIZE our members to contest for a seat at decision making tables! After three years of organizing, this past June our youth won Our Healing in Our Hands SFUSD district campaign, winning almost $1.5 million for our proposed wellness demands! I am proud to work with a community who believes we need to build infrastructure for healing in order for folks to show up as our full selves, and I’mexcited to work alongside this community to fight against forces that shape our school systems and the trauma it inflicts on the mental health of our students. Because when our students become agents of their own healing and well-being, our entire community-teachers, staff, parents- we all grow stronger!
As Lead Youth Organizer, CPA is where I choose to live out my commitment, it is where I choose to ground my community, and it is where I will continue to build my vision and promise to the future I want to create. Please help me as we create a future of building collective power and real alternatives to issues! I hope you will join me in donating to CPA today -- but know that any amount makes a huge difference!
