For the past 9 years, Ready for Reading has opened the doors of its 8,000 sq ft Community Library and Learning Center to over 300 people each day in Rwinkwavu, a poor rural area of eastern Rwanda, Africa. Preschoolers to grandparents participate in a wide variety of programs; literacy and computer classes, music, basketball, girls/boys/moms clubs, afterschool programs and community cultural and social events.
A year ago, when the world went into COVID lockdown, with an empty building and our community depending on us, we knew couldn’t wait it out. If people couldn’t come to the library the library had to come to them. And it did.
We quickly got our Covid legs under us, creating a virtual Ready for Reading community using WhatsApp, social media, YouTube, a website learning portal, radio and network of Literacy Ambassadors keeping people connected, reading and learning. These Initiatives, born of necessity, allowed us to expand services, strengthen community ties and proved to be more than a temporary life-line, effective and relevant programs in a post-pandemic world.
With schools reopened and students almost a year behind, teachers face a momentous academic task and no time to devote to reading during school hours. To bridge this reading gap Ready for Reading is launching the “Reading Riders” Program, storytellers on bikes. Each day our Bike Brigade will head out to schools armed with books, activities and inspiration to keep kids reading, curious and engaged.
The 10-rider program kicks off in mid-May and with partners-in-waiting, strategically placed throughout Rwanda, our goal is to have the program begin to roll-out by August. Our immediate fundraising goals are the purchase of bikes, helmets, equipment, learning materials and the Reading Riders salaries to launch the program.
Be part of building our Bike Brigade. By DONATING TODAY you’ll get our riders on their bikes, to the schools and prevent children most affected by the pandemic from falling further behind.
Take action now – Share RfR’s GoFundMe campaign page with your network and help raise more funds in support of the Reading Riders Program and ensure students make up lost ground in 2021.
