The Autauga County Heritage Association (ACHA) plans to build a restroom facility at Buena Vista Mansion that will meet the requirements of the American Disabilities Act (ADA). Currently, Buena Vista has no restrooms available on the first floor of the house. There are two restrooms available upstairs but not handicap accessible. It is not feasible to alter the existing first-floor interior to provide an ADA compliant restroom. In order to meet the ADA requirement under ADAAG 232.2 Exception 2 for one accessible toilet facility for a historic facility, we currently rent a continuously placed handicap portalet which is not adequate for venue marketing.
Buena Vista circa 1840 is the only home in Autauga County, AL on the National Register of Historic Places. There is no other home in Autauga County that allows and encourages the exploration of this important time in our history. Buena Vista is used as a venue for educational tours and events such as weddings and receptions, baby and bridal showers, club meetings, birthday and anniversary celebrations, retirement parties, holiday parties, photo sessions, repasts, reunions, teas, etc. Revenue from these events is used to assist in maintaining Buena Vista but insufficient for funding this kind of project. This ADA restroom facility would allow ACHA to be more competitive in the current venue market, projecting an increase in revenue of 25 % annually.
We estimate the cost of the project to be $45,000. We expect about 50% to be funded from government sources, 30% from private donations, and the remaining 20% from in-kind services of labor and materials from local community organizations and individuals.
The timeline for the project is January 1 - September 30, 2020.
