Baking for a Better Future

My name is Beatriz and I am the proud daughter of two immigrants. Similar to many first-generation children, my parents instilled in me the importance of education and how it would unlock many opportunities in life. I quickly became passionate about learning and I grew up knowing that I wanted to make a difference in this world thru education.
In line with my passion for wanting to make a difference in the world, I became the first person in my family to commission into the Air Force. As a young 1st Lt., I deployed to Iraq as an intelligence officer and supported incredible missions, and worked alongside some of the most hard-working and passionate people. I happened to be deployed in an area that was being terrorized by ISIS, which forced many families to relocate, leave everything they had behind, and take refuge in internally displaced people (IDP) camps throughout the area. When I visited one of these IDP camps, I remember wondering what would happen to these children. For many of these kids, they have been displaced, lost families, and have practically lost their childhoods. Education was no longer a priority for these children as survival became their first concern. It broke my heart to think that this was their new reality and I vowed that one day I would be able to give them hope.
This brings us to where we're at today. I thought of the idea of combining my love for baking and my passion for helping others by selling desserts to raise both awareness and funds towards education for children who have been affected by war. My goal for 2021 is to start my non-profit to help with this, but in the meantime, I have decided to support the International Rescue Committee (IRC). This non-profit organization has a huge impact on the world. Founded by Albert Einstein during World War II, one of their key missions is to help bring educational opportunities to children who have been affected by war or conflict. According to the IRC, $1,160 can provide 60 children with a year of school! So my goal is to raise $5000 by March and I need YOUR help to make this happen. Whether you buy desserts, share the page on social media, or donate, every little bit helps.
