Bruin Shelter x Trojan Shelter
Home is more than a place to live; it is culture, security, and even takes a human form – family. For a rising number of college students today, home is either unsafe, unsupportive, or does not exist.
Two years ago, Students 4 Students was created to launched our first shelter, run by Bruin Shelter student leaders, to give their fellow students a safe place to sleep, food to eat, and most importantly a fighting chance to reach their dream of holding a diploma. We've always relied on donors to help cover our in-kind rent to stay open for next year (specify 'Bruin Shelter' for your donation)!
Now, USC students with the same tireless optimism and drive to make social change, are building up a potential new shelter, to be run by Trojan Shelter student leaders. Now, we need your help to make Trojan Shelter a reality (specify 'Trojan Shelter' for your donation)!
Whoever gets to $15k first will have a shelter tour for their supporters!! Though we may come from different backgrounds and hold different beliefs, we are all bound by a shared desire to build a better future for our community, so we've pooled together, and alongside you, we can make both shelters possible for the most vulnerable students who need a bed to lay their head in. Thank you for being a student-centric, generous member of our village!
College Homelessness: By the Numbers
The numbers on college hunger and homelessness are only recently being studied, and the full dimensions of a tragedy are only starting to come into view. I’m from UCLA; 5% of all UC students reported experiencing homelessness in 2017, 10% of Cal State students, and 20% of community college students in LA, experienced homelessness this past year. These students are caught in a perfect storm of two measurable forces, each of them massive in their own right: the lack of affordable housing, and the lack of affordable education.
# “I had a conflicted family life. I never really knew my mom, except that she didn’t knew her mom either. I dove into school so I could build a good life with my own two hands — far from the past, ready for the future. I want to be fearless in getting to my dreams and goals.” - Alexa M., 2018 resident
A Shelter For Students, By Students
A couple years ago, Students 4 Students was created to give our peers a safe place to sleep, food to eat, and most importantly a fighting chance to reach their dream of holding a diploma. Our space is open every day, including weekends, to provide these young people with a home and a sense of normalcy. Our tireless student leaders and community partners work together to provide our residents with shelter, food, security, and a supportive environment of mutual respect.
S4S strongly believes in the power of young people as leaders, which accomplishes a couple amazing feats: first, the peer-to-peer model produces a substantial yield in getting young adults housed – many of them avoid shelters because they do not feel safe in these spaces. Second, because our shelters are student-run on a nightly basis, we are paving the way for the next generation of leaders in community service, non-profit, and philanthropy. With purpose, compassion, and energy, young people are changing the world.
# “It’s hard to explain, this place means a lot. I might not have been able to graduate without this place. It's because I did not worry constantly about having a place to sleep.” - Helen G., 2018 resident
We Rely on Donors to Keep Operating
We run on a shoestring budget, and our shelter is only possible thanks to generous support from people like you. One of our core tenets is strength in numbers, and you are the reason we can rent our space and keep the lights on. We are a small, yet mighty team keeping beds open for our fellow students across Los Angeles, and your gift will go a long way in directly lessening student homelessness, while simultaneously providing a training ground for young, aspiring leaders.
# "I’m a part of the Guardian Scholars program who referred me to Bruin Shelter. Without Bruin Shelter, it's a really scary thought. I just can't imagine where I’d be. I don't have the words to thank you for all the help you have provided. The biggest change in myself that I’ve noticed is I have the strength and optimism now to get my diploma." - Chris B., 2017 resident
Thank You For Being Awesome
We are students running a shelter for our fellow students, so our residents can hunger for knowledge, and not hunger for food; so that they can use their smarts on their books, not on finding a place to sleep every night. We run our shelter aware that 1 in 5 community college students in Los Angeles experiences homelessness - thank you for joining us in changing those numbers.
