This historic cemetery, created in 1857 designed by John Chislett, sits above the town of Wellsburg, WV. Brooke Cemetery is the final resting place for over 5000 beloved Wellsburg residents. Several historic figures are buried in Brooke Cemetery. Patrick Gass, a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, many Civil War Veterans as well as a member of the Boston Tea Party. Visitors to the cemetery have most certainly been impressed with the picturesque views of Wellsburg and the Ohio River. This cemetery is more than a burial place, it is a piece of our history. It is a place where community members frequently go for walks and, of course, a place where we pay our respects.
While beautiful, its hilly location makes maintenance difficult. The Brooke Cemetery board is asking for your help to maintain this important part of Wellsburg's history. Funding would support the purchase of updated equipment and help with the cost of general maintenance. This will enable us to tackle the 36 acres comprised by mostly steep terrain. We are hoping to raise $25,000 for this much-needed equipment. Your support will help us ensure the cemetery continues to serve as a peaceful, beautiful resting place. Your contribution is tax-deductible.
