Our understanding (albeit limited? flat-out wrong?) of the U.K. tradition of Boxing Day:
~ Rich people make their servants work through Christmas Day.
~ On Dec. 26th, the day after Christmas, they would finally send their servants home to their own families with 'boxes' of crap.
We are playing on the more modern interpretations of Boxing Day - dedicating the day to celebrating and performing charitable deeds - with a BX twist! Hence, BrOnXING Day, to show love for the only NYC borough on the contiguous U.S. (so help you other boroughs when the apocalypse comes).
This year, we're hoping you'll join us for a good time, and join us in our efforts to support POTS: Part of the Solution - an amazing Bronx nonprofit organization with a history of empowering folks towards economic and social stability through compassion and respect. You can donate to this Crowdrise campaign, or bring donations of non-perishable food or toiletries that we will bring to POTS. Email dohertytheresa@hotmail.com for address and details. (Even if you can't come to the festivities, we hope you'll join us in philanthropy!)
Until then, Wesołych Świąt and Maligayang Pasko (or, Merry Christmas, to you non-Polish or Tagalog speaking monolinguals)!
Love,
Joanna Micek & Theresa Doherty
