As I celebrate my graduation this May, I recognize with humility, that educational opportunities are a privilege. When I entered college, I learned about the reality of human trafficking, both for sex and labor on the global scale, and invested my time raising community awareness around this topic. For me, the most tangible response to the overwhelmingly complex and devastating issues I learned about was clear: supporting Fair Trade initiatives as a way to combat human exploitation and empower vulnerable communities. Two years ago during a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, I was deeply impacted by witnessing firsthand how a fair wage opportunity of making jewelry was elevating people out of poverty, affecting the trajectory of their family for generations to come. I met a young Kenyan father named Fred who, with the consistent fair wages he’s paid for his work, is able to send his children to school and has empowered his wife to start a business.
Fair Trade changes real lives.
I am so excited that Fair Trade certifications give us the ability as consumers to positively impact people’s lives through our purchasing power. I am realizing my own ability to create positive change in the world, and partnering with Fair Trade L.A. is the way I am currently doing that. Our goal of making Los Angeles a Fair Trade designated town will make Fair Trade products more accessible to consumers and tourist at large, and empower the communities who produce them. I invite you to join me in financial support of this campaign as we continue to work towards making the world a better place for all!
