The back story
On the first day that the preschool in rural Durissy, Haiti opened 17 years ago, the children each carried their own small chair to a vacant home for the first day of class. Through the years the school continued to add another grade until the school educated children k-12. With the help of the Digicel Foundation, real school buildings were built for the elementary and upper school. The preschool was conducted in a large tent-like structure with a canvas roof and haphazard materials. Children wrote their numbers and letters on the dirt outside with sticks, as they had no paper, pencils or chalk. Books and other materials were scarce.
Against all of this, three students from this first preschool class were among the original graduating class in 2018. Several are now in universities in Port au Prince.
Educate Haiti’s benefactors provided funds for the new preschool, which was dedicated in 2018. However, the rooms were sometimes dark and always warm.
Durissy Schools get Solar Energy
This August 2019, 15 Twende Solar volunteers went to Durissy, Haiti to install a 24kW off-grid solar electric system. Being a 1-hour drive from the nearest town with electricity, this solar electric system is a catalyst to bring Durissy straight into the 21st Century.
Durissy is special.
