I was 43 years old in 2017 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I found a lump in my left breast while doing a routine self-exam. I waited almost a year when the lump grew bigger to have my first mammogram done. I wasn’t too concerned because there was no family history of this disease. I was wrong. I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Stage IIB; estrogen/progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative.
Throughout my breast cancer journey running was my therapy. It helped me ease my fear, anxiety, and depression of this disease. I am grateful to have joined TEAM BCRF to raise funding for continued breast cancer research. I will be running in honor of my mother-in-law Melissa Okwiya who passed away from breast cancer in 2007 and the women who’s adversities in their breast cancer journey are far greater than mine.

MORE ABOUT BCRF
Our BCRF Half Marathon team is diverse—we are breast cancer patients, survivors, family members, employees, supporters, allies, professionals, runners, non-runners, and even researchers. But what we have in common is one thing: the desire and dedication to do our part to help bring about a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. For more than 25 years, BCRF-funded researchers have been at the forefront of nearly every significant breakthrough in understanding, preventing and treating the disease. We know that the answers continue to lie in science, and that the only thing standing in the way is research funding. With your help, together we can accelerate progress and achieve a world without breast cancer.
