My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age 46. Because she was under 50 her doctor insisted she be tested for a gene mutation that may have lead to the cancer at her young age.
She tested positive. So did I.
I watched her go through her treatment and other preventative surgeries and decided right then that I would not allow my kids to watch me go through what I witnessed with her.
At age 23, I had a double mastectomy.
The knowledge that this gene mutation led to a significant increase risk of cancer was discovered by Mary-Claire King utilizing research funds she received from the American Cancer Society.
That knowledge saved my mom's life and I believe saved mine!
Please make a donation, take a walk and help the ACS continue this important research. Maybe my daughter will have better options than I have today!
