My name is Brandon Ho, I'm a high school sophomore at Bloomfield Hills High School and my goal is to raise awareness about homelessness. Did you know there are over half a million Americans that are homeless every night, and that 1.5 million Americans will sleep in a shelter at some time during this year? In Detroit alone, we have 10,000 homeless looking for shelter every night. The homeless represent our most vulnerable population and include children. Please consider helping the homeless by donating to an amazing Detroit non-profit organization called THE EMPOWERMENT PLAN.
The organization's purpose is to help break the cycle of homelessness through employment. At Empowerment Plan, the employees work to produce a durable and innovative coat that transforms into a sleeping bag for the homeless (see video). They have distributed over 35,000 coats for free to those in need all over the world. What is especially unique is that the Empowerment Plan hires its employees from Detroit homeless shelters to work in the company and make the coats! Not only does the company provide warm coats/sleeping bags to the homeless, but they also help to provide financial stability and break the cycle of homelessness for all their employees! This employment opportunity ensures that each person they hire is able to earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence for themselves and their children. The company also pays for further education (GED, skilled tradesman courses, etc) so their employees are able to leave the program and reach the next level of employment in the general workforce.
Take a look at my video link and pictures at the top of this page. CNN.com just profiled the impact of this organization in January 2020. You can see their article at
Check out this additional video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi0fHDblOzU to hear directly from those who have benefited. In addition to providing training for all their employees to return to the workforce, they help with everything from housing and childcare to transportation, education and more. Every single employee has moved out of the shelter within the first 4-6 weeks of working for the Empowerment Plan and no one has returned to homelessness once they've been hired! Over 70 families have been permanently lifted out of homelessness through the Empowerment Plan.
A gift of ANY AMOUNT goes a long way in helping to provide warm coats, stability and support the employment for our community. Please consider donating here today. I know that together, we can make a difference in our community and break the cycle of homelessness.

2/21/2020 UPDATE: I was contacted by the Empowerment Plan. We raised enough to sponsor 20 35 coats so far! I have chosen to partner with the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department. They were excited to receive the coats and have already started distributing these coats to the homeless that frequently come into the emergency room and are in dire need of them. All future funds raised to sponsor coats will continue to be distributed through the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department to their homeless patients.
3/3/20 update: Thank you to the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department for their generous donations and support! We have raised enough money for 15 additional coats and are at a total of 35 coats. These will all be distributed by the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department for homeless patients with the greatest need.
Thank you so much for helping to contribute to this great cause, provide warm coats for the homeless AND provide long term financial stability through employment!
