Bowdoin Men's Soccer stands in solidarity with the Black community and supports the fight towards ending police brutality, creating a fair criminal justice system, and ensuring racial equality. With this in mind, we have decided to begin a fundraising campaign to support the Bail Project- a nonprofit that has been providing pivotal aid to free arrested peaceful protestors. This is a critical cause that will allow the protests to continue to work towards substantive change. The Bail Project goes beyond providing bail funds. They look at the criminal justice process from a holistic perspective in order to provide support to low-income and underpriviledged communities throughout the entire process to ensure adequate representation throughout the entire process. The Bail Project optimizes our donations by recollecting and recylcing the bail money to make sure every penny is used efficiently and effectively.
While we have chosen to focus our fundraising efforts on a single cause, we encourage everyone to donate to a wide variety of funds and causes to the best of their ability in order to support the forward progress of this movement. We have compiled a document (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AwTUrpdm4NCulZd7doEOHs3ytFIaAe9coaWS4N95Gog/edit?usp=sharing) with only some of the many causes doing great work on issues of police brutality, bail funds, social justice reform, and others. Furthermore, education is just as important to continue the momentum that has built across the country. On the same document, our team has put together numerous resources with the goal of informing and driving further conversations in order to create lasting and tranformative change in our society. Please do all that you can to support this incredibly important cause.
Bowdoin Men's Soccer Official Statement:
The Bowdoin Men’s Soccer program recognizes that in a time of need, we cannot let down our fellow students, teammates, friends, and family with silence and passivity. We are working to become better allies and fight for each other off the field as much as we do on it. Our program stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and with those who have taken to the streets, the polls, their wallets, phones, and social media to support the fight against racial injustice in America. We support all people of color in the fight against oppression in all its forms, including at the hands of the police.
As a team, our goal is to constantly work to better ourselves, and right now that means working individually, amongst ourselves, and within our local communities to actively change our country for the better. For many of us, we understand that we will never fully understand. However, we are committed to affecting change in the long term as this fight is not just about the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, but a systemic issue that must be continually addressed and a fight that must be continually supported.
We are providing our team’s resource document with helpful links and information, as well as our gofund me page for The Bail Project. The Bail Project provides bail to those arrested in these protests, but the main goal of the organization is to provide bail to underprivileged communities and guide them through the entire judicial process to ensure adequate representation. While our Gofundme may be for this one cause, your impact is not limited to just this.
We encourage everyone to do their part on an individual level by utilizing our resource document and Gofundme page to help make changes to their community and our country as a whole.
