On March 10, 2016, the world became a little bit darker when we lost Jack Perreault. Jack was kind, smart, sensitive, loyal, and had the most contagious laugh. He was adventurous, fearless, and had the biggest heart. There's not a day that goes by that he doesn't cross my mind. I'll never forget the last time that I said goodbye to him, in the SICU at Boston Medical Center.
When I graduated nursing school two years ago and applied to Boston Medical Center's surgical step-down unit as my first job fresh out of nursing school, I never thought in a million years that they would hire me. Since Jack's passing, the way that the nurse's & extended treatment team treated Jack & his family has stuck with me - it's something that I never forgot, and a very big reason why I wanted to work at BMC. It's been a year and a half since I first started at BMC, and I've learned more from the patients that I've taken care of each day than I did throughout four long, grueling years of nursing school.
Each and every shift that I work, I do my very best to be the best supporter & advocate that I can for my patients and those that mean the most to them - just like Jack's nurse's did for him and his family & friends.
I'm very proud and excited to say that I'm able to give back to BMC in a much bigger way this spring by running the 2020 Boston Marathon with Team BMC. This organization does so much good for the city of Boston and the people who call this city home - BMC is New England's largest safety net hospital and a national leader in caring for the urban and working poor. Existing principally to care for any and every person who walks through its doors, BMC does so with innovative treatments—many built within its own walls—and an unwavering commitment from providers—who are leaders in their field—and a highly skilled professional staff. Striving to achieve the best possible outcome for every patient isn’t ancillary to BMC’s mission—it is BMC’s mission. With a commitment to health equity, BMC is working toward building healthier communities through national models of care and groundbreaking research, education and social service programs.
Team BMC is running Boston 2020 for the hospital’s newest endeavor, Vision 2030, which aims to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world by 2030. Vision 2030 encompasses the longstanding belief that when an organization invests in the root causes of urban health issues, the community and its people greatly benefit and thrive. To improve the health of Boston, BMC is uniting community, policy and research leaders to develop, deploy, iterate and evaluate strategies to address social determinants of health and promote equity in our community. The multi-sector collaboration will: advance the health of our community today; and improve conditions linked to poor health outcomes to secure the health of our community for generations to come.
The funds raised through this year's marathon team will go toward making Vision 2030 a reality, driving key investments in the following areas, as well as other endeavors.
· Complex Chronic Disease: To define a new model of care for complex disease management that improves health outcomes and reduces avoidable health care utilization.
· Substance Use Disorders: To reverse the trend in overdose deaths and improve access to evidence-based substance use disorder treatment and harm and risk reduction services.
· Mental Health Disorders: To integrate mental health services into primary care and expand access to mental health services throughout the community.
· Housing Insecurity and Homelessness: To improve access to safe and affordable housing options and establish supportive housing interventions for individuals with complex medical and social needs.
· Other Key Social Determinants of Health: To sustainably target key social determinants of health negatively impacting health outcomes in conjunction with community partners.
Change of this magnitude is only possible when we come together, and we welcome you to join us in our pursuit. Your support is integral to the existence of programs and services our patients rely—and thrive—on, with many depending solely on philanthropic support. By donating to Team BMC you are showing your commitment to the entire city of Boston.
Thank you for supporting Boston Medical Center in its mission to provide exceptional care, without exception!
