Words cannot express how honored I was to receive the email indicating that I had been selected as a member of the Boston Bruins Foundation 2019 Boston Marathon Team. I was away on a business trip and on the drive to Reagan National Airport to fly home I read the email on my phone. I was quite literally moved to tears.
I have been a casual runner for over 20 years but have only once ever ran in a “real” road race, and that was a 10K back in 2002. Even so, running in the Boston Marathon has been a dream of mine for a long time. Why? Allow me to explain…
First, I like a challenge. I want to prove to myself that I can actually walk the walk (well I guess run the run is more appropriate here) and not just talk the talk. I can tell myself and others that I want to run a marathon, but those are just words. Remember the old adage, "Go big or go home". And, I figured if I ever want to entertain running in a marathon, it had to be Boston. It is my hometown. It is the race that sets itself apart from all others.
Still, I never had any delusions that I could put myself into a position of qualifying. Fortunately, the BAA allows runners to enter the race in support of charities such as the Boston Bruins Foundation. Which is simply amazing. So, in addition to being able to achieve a personal goal, I can do so in support of raising money for such an incredible charitable foundation.
Sounds like a win, win to me!!
So, are you with me? I hope so and I greatly appreciate your support in reaching my fundraising goal!!
