These are unprecedented times for us all. Life for asylum-seekers is growing ever more desperate as the COVID-19 virus makes its way into the border towns where thousands of families are huddled along our borders as part of our government's inhumane MPP protocols. Four weeks ago Doctors Without Borders abandoned Mexicali leaving in its wake hundreds of migrants with no consistent medical care. Border Kindness has stepped in and is converting a space next to our legal and administrative office into a medical clinic in an urgent effort to stave off disaster. We can only continue our efforts with the support of people like you.
Border Kindness remains the ONLY humanitarian aid organization operating in Mexicali and things are growing more urgent by the day. Shelters in the city that had previously provided housing and food for the asylum-seeking populations have shuttered their doors, leaving desperate families on the streets. Border Kindness continues to fund and provide operational support to a local shelter (The Pink Shelter) but it is filled to capacity and simply cannot house those who have been recently displaced. We have, however continued to fund and purchase food for a partner kitchen, which is open to all, and everyday hundreds of men, women and children line up (we try to keep social-distancing in the forefront) for their only source of nutrition.
We fear a complete humanitarian crisis is looming as we scramble to continue to provide food, shelter and medical care for hundreds of asylum-seekers, migrants and refugees in the face of this global crisis. To compound the direness, it is reported the US may release hundreds of migrants from its detention centers shipping them to Mexicali with nothing, essentially leaving them on the streets. Once here, they will find no shelter, food, or medical care and will be easy targets for kidnappings, muggings and assault. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
While other NGO and humanitarian aid organizations have ceased operating, Border Kindness WILL NOT ABANDON the most vulnerable. We must continue helping our sisters and brothers during this crisis. The lives of thousands of people are at imminent risk. Thanks to an anonymous donor, ALL FEES are being covered so every dollar goes directly to the campaign. Please consider donating, any amount truly makes a difference!
100% of the funds raised will go directly to facilitating the purchase of life-saving medical supplies, food and equipment (including an anti-bacterial water tank, freezer and refrigerator). We will posting stories & photos of the work you are helping to make happen on Instagram @borderkindness and Facebook @bondadfrontera.
