Our Dad, Bob Pearlman, loved Africa. In particular, he had a passion for Kenya, the Maasai people, their tribal culture, and he deeply loved the wildlife and habitat surrounding them.
Bob had an innate proclivity for exploration and was by nature curious about the world and how everything worked. He became a skilled designer and professional illustrator at a very young age, and the combination of his talent and his eye for detail meant he could not only see but also express the intricacies, nuances, and beauty of all kinds of animals, plant life, and the phsyical body.
Bob began learning to speak Maa, the unwritten lanuage of the Maasai people, in 1973 in preparation for his first expedition to Kenya. Ever since, Kenya and the Maasai have been an integral part of his work and life. An explorer by nature, and then more 'officially' as a member, fellow, and board member of The Explorers Club (MED'78), it became Bob's personal and lifelong mission - a mission that interwove his passion for exploring and love of learning - to help the Maasai culture and tribal history live on in our ever modernizing world, and to protect and preserve the magnificent animals and ecosystems that encompass their environment.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an organization that Bob fully supported and regularly contributed to over the years.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust exists to protect Africa’s wildlife and to preserve habitats for the future of all wild species. It was founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her late husband David, who at the age of 28 began his life's work with Kenya's National Parks: combating poachers, researching, rescuing, and hand rearing elephants & other vulnerable or endangered wild species, pioneering rehabilitation programs, and developing infrastructure across the country.
They are a non-profit organization with a mission and focus in perfect alignment with Bob's.
We know how much it would mean to our Dad, Bob Pearlman, that we remember and carry on his mission, his work, and his devotion to Kenya, the Maasai, their flora and fauna and ecosystem — a country and a people that he loved so much for so many years — that we continue his pursuit of ensuring our current and future earth is a sustainable home and resource for people and cultures everywhere for generations to come, that we do what we can to ensure that all of this, his legacy, the essence of Bob lives on.
Bob's legacy can and will live on. With every story we tell, every memory we reflect on, and with every action we take to help the causes that our Dad poured his sweat, heart, and soul into... we celebrate his memory, his persistence, his energy, and his love of nature, culture, animals.
If you'd like to do something to remember Bob Pearlman, contributing to Sheldrick Trust in Bob's memory is a perfect way to celebrate his life and work. Your donation helps continue his work to protect elephants, preserve habitats, provide water relief, and so many other efforts, to help the Maasai and the peoples and animals and lands across Kenya thrive for many, many years to come.
THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts, for honoring Bob Pearlman's legacy.
Ashley (Bob's daughter) & all of Bob's family (Karol, Ilana, Ashley, Alex, Mike, & Rich)
