We have spent the past eleven years developing and refining both our job training program and our bakery/café model. Our youth are regularly placed in permanent employment prior to or immediately after graduating from our 12-week program, breaking the cycle of generational poverty into which most of them have been born.
We have paid our youth over $200,000 in wages in the past eleven years, empowering them to become accountable for their transportation to and from work, while teaching them to responsibly manage their finances. We have prepared them to be competitive in the workforce by building their skills, their experience and their confidence.
While the average nonprofit social enterprise earns 20% of its revenue, earned income from our bakery sales supports an average of 65% of our budget each year. We are ready to expand Blue Sky Bakery & Café.
Renovating our cafe to accommodate private parties and walk-in customers at the same time will create an estimated $35,000 in additional revenue each year. The money that we hope to raise in this campaign will be a one-time expense that will contribute immeasurably to our long-term sustainability. This increased capacity will also allow us to employ 25% more youth each year.
Please give what you can; donations of all sizes are very much appreciated! Thank you for believing, as we do, that Chicago's at-risk youth deserve the dignity of work.
