We are pleased to announce our annual Township of Bloomfield Martin Luther King Day of Service. This year we are celebrating our 5th year of community service and are seeking donors and sponsors to make this year the biggest year yet! Our work is organized through the efforts of the Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service Committee. We are a community-based 501©3 organization whose commitment is to serving and building our communities through our partnerships with the Township, our residents, and our law enforcement professionals and firefighters who are ever-present to facilitate much of what we do.
In previous years we have engaged in numerous activities:
2015 – Painted murals at Bloomfield Middle School. We held new and used book drive for the middle school.
2016 – Cleared a space for a teen lounge at the Bloomfield Public Library and painted murals. We collected for our first food drive.
2017 – Painted murals at Berkley elementary school. We collected for our food drive.
2018 – Painted murals at Demarest elementary and Bloomfield Middle School. We collected for our food drive.
For 2019, we have set an ambitious goal of collecting 5 tons of food for local pantries, which we will be doing with the support of our local grocers and people like you who continue to donate so generously. We will also prepare 1,000 hygiene kits. We have spoken to organizations that provide social services and we are collecting items based on their feedback. The MLK Committee will focus on our most vulnerable residents; the homeless, those at risk of homelessness, those who have food insecurities or those who do not have enough money to buy basic hygiene items like soap or toothbrushes etc. Therefore, we have decided to collect food and prepare hygiene kits to help nourish them and provide the basics they need. By supporting this project, you are supporting your family, friends and neighbors. Please help us, help them, maintain their dignity and feed their families. It is here that we need your financial support as we strive to purchase the items for the kits. We anticipate that our costs will be around $5,000, which will cover many of the contents (e.g., shampoo, toothbrushes/paste, deodorants, soaps, etc.) along with branded bags.
We affirm that strong communities demonstrate compassion through their support of one another. To that end, this organization singularly focuses on encouraging participation in activities that bring us together to work for the betterment of all!
