It happened one safari... In September 2003, we visited a Primary School in Kenya with a delivery of books and pencils — there were over 300 children in the courtyard to greet us. The dancing, singing and smiles of the children won our hearts. When we came home, we could not get the school out of our minds and decided to continue to help.
Today, at our adopted Kenyan school, all classrooms have a cement floors; the rooms have been plastered and painted white; there is a library with books about countries from all over the world; the roof and exterior of the building have been painted; all rooms have new desks. The students now have a playing field with goal posts, uniforms and balls; there is a veranda around the school to keep the dirt out of the classrooms, especially in the rainy season. We have added offices. more classrooms. water storage, a kitchen and LUNCHES. There are metal doors and windows where there were none, and, a garden to teach the students about eco-farming.
Bloom Where Planted not only works to provide a better learning environment for Primary students (now numbering nearly 600), but we also provide school supplies, books, clothing, shoes and more. As students leave the Primary school after class 8, we recruit sponsors for as many children as we possibly can in order to provide a Secondary School education for them. During the last 15 years, we have sponsored more than 150 students through secondary school and 40 of those students have gone on to various colleges and universities around Kenya.
