Over the past few weeks, the Alvernia Men's Soccer and Women's Ice Hockey programs have been angry, sad, frustrated, hurt, and at a complete loss. We've taken the time to speak individually with a lot of our team members and we have also met collectively to support each other. We have discussed individual and systemic racial inequalities and we have considered how we would like to respond and take action. Our hearts go out to all of those that have lost loved ones as a result of the racism within our nation. We stand in proud support of the Black Lives Matter movement. We want to make sure that we follow up our statements with an action plan because no amount of words or posts will bring back the lives that were wrongfully taken away. We will be a driving force in overcoming 400 years of systemic racism. We will be the change we want to see in the world.
We must do what is right! "The time is always right to do what is right." - MLK Jr.
We must not remain silent! "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." - MLK Jr.
We must be people of strong character! "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." - MLK Jr.
100% of the donations received will be donated to a progressive thinking organization that focuses on Civil Rights Advocacy. The organization we have selected is called Color of Change and you can read more about them at www.colorofchange.org Our fundraising goal is to receive 846 (to honor the final 8 minutes and 46 seconds of George Floyd's life) donations.
