TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE COURSE OF MATERNITY CARE IN NYC!!
We are a team of experienced, BIPOC local doulas and birthing professionals with a dream: to create The Birthing Place, serving families in search of a safe, serene, and deeply supportive alternative to birthing low-risk pregnancies in hospitals. Around the world, birth is commonly viewed as a normal biological process rather than a medical intervention, and birth centers are much more commonly used outside the US. In New York State, however, there are only three accredited free-standing birth centers. The high out-of-pocket costs of homebirth and difficulties with insurance coverage for out-of-network midwives effectively limit most births to hospitals. And while birthing in a hospital is a valuable option, it can often be intervention suggestive, more medical provider than patient centered, and with strong adherence to protocols that are not always individualized or evidence based.
We see birth differently (click to read our core values) and are committed to creating a space for families who want a more holistic, natural, and safe experience of childbirth. Our approach in providing individualized care throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth reduces maternal and infant stress, provides family support beyond what is traditionally available in hospitals, and uses the skills of generations of midwives, doulas, and community birth workers from whom we’ve developed our expertise. Our goal is to create a sanctuary that offers personalized loving support for the planning, expectant, and newly blossomed family.
The Birthing Place will increase the very limited options available for parents who seek safe, state-approved alternatives to hospital births. Our birth center will be located in the Riverdale area of the Bronx, and easily accessible from key neighborhoods heavily impacted by limited quality healthcare. In our culturally diverse borough, we are proud that The Birthing Place has multicultural and multilingual midwives to best serve all families and their diverse wishes and needs in our amazing city. Access to quality maternal care is of particular concern for our underserved communities, who suffer most from racial disparities in the healthcare system. NY State ranks 30th in maternal morbidity outcomes in the country, and has the country’s 11th highest C-section rate. How can we change these striking numbers?
Midwifery-led, free-standing birth centers have been statistically proven to experience fewer complications and require fewer medical interventions than in-hospital births. The Birthing Place is in a unique position to change these outcomes and improve the health disparities of our most marginalized families. The time is now to change birthing in NYC and we will be a leading example of what is possible for the future of maternity care. As hospital birthing during the pandemic introduces additional stress and restrictions on families, we aim to create a safe space that honors the process while delivering the best emotional, physical, and spiritual care.
WHO WE ARE:
Myla Flores has 14 years of experience serving in the birth field, during which she’s had the opportunity to work in midwifery-led birth centers around the country and world, witnessing the beauty of birthing people having true autonomy over their bodies. She founded The Birthing Place because she firmly believes more New Yorkers should have access to these types of birthing experiences and is passionate about bringing her loving and holistic approach to childbirth to more families. She is working in collaboration with a team of exceptionally experienced BIPOC maternal health professionals - amazing midwives, doulas, educators, passionate community members, and engaged organizations to help drive the mission of The Birthing Place forward.
The following organizations are key partners in making The Birthing Place a reality:
Birth from the Earth was established by Nubia Martin, who has been serving her community for over a decade as a Community Birth Worker, Activist, and Midwife. She helps to bring The Birthing Place to fruition as a partner and co-creator, and will be one of our cherished pillar midwives.
Save A Rose Foundation founded by Bruce McIntyre, aims to amplify the voices of Black & Brown families who have lost loved ones or have endured trauma in childbirth due to racism in the healthcare system. Bruce's efforts and partnership with The Birthing Place is in honor of his partner Amber Rose Isaac, who suffered an avoidable death during childbirth in April 2020.
MyLifeMyPlanet Foundation co-led by Michala & Mayan Metzler, supports the health and wellbeing of human beings, developing innovative projects to improve the quality of life and betterment of our planet. MLMP helps to actualize a unique hallmark green design for The Birthing Place.
The Birthing Place will be a center for health, wellness & family and will have three components: The Learning Center, The Wellness Center, and The Birth Center.
This community space will be a hub that provides Holistic Wellness, educational offerings including nutrition in the childbearing year, alternative approaches to fertility awareness, pregnancy preparation, childbirth education, feeding and caring for newborns, and parent groups. We will have a strong emphasis on holistic prenatal support from midwives with full attention and respect for each individual's unique needs. This is just the beginning of what’s coming, but above all: The Birthing Place will be a lovingly designed safe haven for birth with access to everything needed for safety, peace, and joy.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
We’re reaching out to you - our community - to support The Birthing Place. We can’t do this without you. The development, design, and construction of our facility is under way – a donation of any size will support our progress and sharing will help us amplify this vital need and reach more people willing to support us!
We aim to raise $800,000 to fund startup costs and allow our contractors to jump right to work! This will involve a gut renovation to transform our location into an eco-friendly facility, the addition of more space, creating a specific-for-birth site to support all that The Birthing Place aims to offer. In addition to legal fees, website development, and marketing efforts, we are excited to incorporate sustainable, eco-conscious materials and design to create a green building, in keeping with our ethos. We’ll also implement mobile health services to provide access to quality midwifery care to more Bronx locations!
We appreciate your interest in supporting us! With your help, we can be ready for our projected 2021 Grand Opening of The Birthing Place. Let’s create this TOGETHER!!
