In about exactly a month and a day from today, I will be turning 20 (January 2nd is my birthday). For my birthday this year, I will be raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. One in four Americans will suffer from mental illness at sometime in their lives, and each year 44,193 die from suicide. For every suicide, 25 attempt it. Unfortunately, I am one of the Americans who suffer from mental illness, and have attempted suicide. It's been a couple of years since both my first and last suicide attempt, and I could not be more grateful to go to a college that I love, have friends that truly make me feel loved, and to all around wake up every day thankful that I am still alive. Despite this, I still struggle, and so do the hundreds of thousands of people living in the US with mental illness. The goals of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is to find ways to prevents suicide, find smarter ways to talk and advocate for mental illness, and to help those who have been affected by suicide. To help those who are still suffering, who have attempted suicide, or have a love one who is gone due to suicide, I ask that you donate- any little bit helps. Feeling the happiest I have in 6 years is the best birthday present I could ever ask for, and I hope together we can help those with mental illnesses celebrate happy birthdays as well.
