This fund is for the family of our beloved PYB Coach and Mentor, Big Joe Daniels.
Joe was a deeply rooted community member in North Philadelphia where he devoted himself to the empowerment of young people and the betterment of his community. He was a part of the Philadelphia Youth Basketball family for the last four years, serving as a coach-mentor in our Middle School Partnership Program at both Kenderton Elementary School & KIPP Philadelphia Prep Academy. He also worked for the Philadelphia School District as a member of the climate support staff at Kenderton, present every day as kids entered and left school with a big smile on his face.
Big Joe embodied the PYB mission. He was equally as passionate about the academic leadership development aspect of our programming as he was about the on-court basketball development work. Always the first to enter the gym and the last to leave it, Joe's commitment and dedication to young people came through in everything that he did. With dreams of making a deeper impact, Joe founded Destined4Greatness Inc. where he provided mentoring, life skills, and counseling to young people in Philadelphia.
Joe was randomly shot to death on December 7, 2019 after dropping off an Uber passenger at Ridge & Oxford in North Philadelphia. He was earning extra money to buy Christmas gifts for his family.
He leaves behind his mother, Angie, his fiance, Felicia, his daughter, Destinee, and his son, Zahir, who continues to be involved with PYB in a big way. Joe's positive, caring, and gentle spirit was contagious to everyone he met. We are fortunate to have had Coach Daniels as a member of our PYB family and will miss him dearly. We ask that everyone to keep Coach Daniels’ family in their thoughts and prayers.
All funds raised through this fundraiser will go directly to Joe's family to assist with funeral costs and the support of his children during this time of need.
