On August 25, 2016, my husband and best friend, William J. DeFord II, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We all know how terribly aggressive and silent this terrible disease can be. My world fell apart, but Bill looked at it in a different way. First off, he was so thankful it wasn't me or the kids who were battling the beast, and he just looked at it as a "new full-time job" in which he had to funnel all his energy into. I am sure that Bill's shear determination, will, grit, and positivity allowed him to live almost 3 more years. That time certainly wasn't easy--I can attest to that. No matter how he made it look that way, it was a battle every single day. No one really knew how much pain he was in, but he couldn't hide all of it from me. My hope is that fewer and fewer families will have to deal with the many effects of this disease. In general, people really don't know unless they have lived it. So many, many people have reached out to me, Emily, Shawn & Jess just hoping there was something they could do to help. It is our hope that in lieu of flowers or any other sentiment that you would donate to Project Purple to help continue the fight to find a cure. Dino Verrelli and his team of fighters have been by our side through the battle. Your help would show our appreciation for their selfless effort to help families experiencing the effects of pancreatic cancer. Your consideration and generosity would be greatly appreciated. Much love to you!
