Daphney, age 11, is the third out of four children in a single parent household. Her parents separated several years ago and her father moved to Texas immediately. Big Sister Lesa met Daphney when she was six years old.
Over the past five years, Lesa has become a rock of support for Daphney. The two see each other consistently. Big Sister Lesa is great at exposing Daphney to new things, like the butterfly exhibit and baking.
Daphney has struggled with dyslexia and was at risk of being held back this past year. Lesa took it upon herself to help Daphney with her reading. She brought her books and even found tutoring resources. Lesa will often have Daphney read to her for a few minutes before heading out for fun. As a result, Daphney went from reading 30 words per minute to 50 words per minute and is much more confident.
Daphney’s mother, Olga, always has great things to say about Lesa. She has mentioned that Lesa takes her role as a Big Sister very seriously and always goes above and beyond. Daphney has said about Lesa, "She is really nice and has time for me and tells me I’m important to her. "She supports me, in everything. She helps me, in everything." What a great testament to their relationship.
Lesa is not only committed to Daphney and her development, but to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization as well. She is very passionate about the mission of the agency. Lesa always signs up for volunteering events and speaks to her friends and network about getting involved.
Last year, Lesa received the Volunteer Service Award from Wells Fargo for her countless hours being a friend to Daphney.
